Despite the government’s sustained efforts to increase interoperability among health IT systems, ONC officials acknowledge that critical information is still not being routinely shared in transitions of care. A major reason for the low level of interoperability is the expense of interconnecting disparate EHR systems, something that standardization can help alleviate.
